Brianna Interviews with Kelly Bennett: Life as a Freelancer

As you may already know, I am a full-time freelancer! I’ve been working one-on-one with small businesses and clients since August 2019 after I left my full-time agency position. It was a huge leap for me, but my nomadic lifestyle requires me to move around a lot (and now we’re in the middle of a pandemic) which led me to get creative with my career while working-from-home. I feel as though I have been exploring my creativity and discovering my interests since childhood, but it wasn’t until 2020 that I felt like I began to feel comfortable with my phases of creative exploration. And not until very recently (like this past month recently) have I felt like I started to find my creative niche!

When my wonderful friend Kelly Bennett, the creator of Creative Calls with Kelly, invited me to speak on her podcast I was 1. super nervous and 2. super excited to talk about my experience as a freelancer because things feel like they are beginning to click for me and I’ve learned a lot in the last year and a half.

Kelly and I actually go back a few years now! I met Kelly in the fall of 2017 in Downtown Las Vegas! At the time I was producing my Socialista Podcast and learned about Kelly from her days at Vegenation (my favorite vegan restaurant). I loved her vibe and how much she invested in supporting the community. I interviewed her for my podcast and that blossomed into a friendship that I am really grateful for. That interview turned into producing two of her podcasts at the time — we podcasted in an airstream (what a magical time!). And now she’s killing it with her latest podcast Talking With Kelly Bennett!

Talk about full circle!

We talked about everything from the life of a freelancer, exploring unique niches, what to do when pitching yourself to a publication, and how to deal with rejection. I am beginning to gain confidence with the work I am creating and it feels so dang good! I am still learning, but I am extremely honored that I was able to talk about my journey and help provide any insight I could to others who freelance or are considering it on the Talking With Kelly Bennett podcast.
