It’s no secret that Demon Slayer, created by Koyoharu Gotouge, has enjoyed the limelight in the eyes of fans in Japan and all over the world. Despite the pandemic, Demon Slayer has had a record-breaking year by claiming the spot of the highest-selling manga series in 2020. With an outstanding 82,345,447 copies sold across the globe, it beat out the longest-running manga series, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. As well as, shattering expectations at Japan’s box offices with the release of Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugan Train over and over again.

What could possibly come next?

Fans will be pleased to know that a Demon Slayer video game has been officially announced to be released in 2021. Originally announced for PlayStation 4, the official Kimetsu no Yaiba: Hinokami Kepputan Twitter account confirms that the game will be brought to the PlayStation 5, the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and on PC via Steam. There are no details as of yet if the game will make its way to the Nintendo Switch.

Developed by CyberConnect2, Demon Slayer: Hinokami Kepputan will likely follow the action RPG formula of its predecessors, the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm series and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The game’s official website confirms players can relive the story through solo play mode and play the offline or online-compatible versus mode. Choose what demon slayer you want to battle against or try your luck online in PvP (player vs player) battles.

At the time of writing this, four promotional videos of gameplay and a behind-the-scenes animation video has been released on the website. In the Japanese February 7, 2021 announcement trailer (it’s still geo-locked) we see protagonist Tanjiro Kamado fighting the fox killer demon, Te oni or “Hand Demon”, on Mt. Fujikasane from the Demon Slayer Final Selection. Official screenshots of the game also show scenes in which fighting occurs in the wisteria forest and near the giant boulder in the mountains found by Sakoniji Urokodaki’s home. It can be assumed that players will have the opportunity to progress through story mode to unlock other characters to play as, since demon, Nezuko Kamado, and Demon Slayers, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Inosuke Hashibara, and Giyu Tomioka, are seen in key visuals by Ufotable and promotional gameplay videos on Twitter.

As it stands, the Demon Slayer anime has one complete season, and the aforementioned movie sequel and season 2 are currently in production. Whether the franchise’s video game covers the full story or only that of season 1, has not been clarified. It’s very possible we may see multiple installments that follow the series, based on each season, similar to the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm series which is currently on its fourth video game title. Either way, the series’ record-breaking trends do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Whatever medium has the Demon Slayer name on it, eager fans are (virtually) waiting to get their hands on it.
