First Published Online Feature: One Year Anniversary
Today marks the one-year anniversary of “The Sprudge Guide to Animal Crossing Cafes” piece I did! ✨
This was the first article that I ever wrote for an online publication and I was a) really shocked it got excepted because it was a bit out there and b) so honored to contribute to Sprudge! ☕️ I had written blog posts for the last five years for lifestyle brands, but this was the first time I had written for an online publication. Part of me felt like a crazy person for even pitching a wild idea like this especially to a coffee publication, but I felt the need to put it out in the world especially during a confusing and unprecedented time during the pandemic.
This was one month after lockdown. I had recently a lot of time on my hands since I had half of my freelance work cut and found myself spending more time playing video games, specifically Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Reflecting on it now, I am grateful for the time I had to really explore writing (not just copywriting). It wasn’t until this piece went live that I considered myself a writer and that was purely for the fact the editor wrote a byline for me that said “Brianna Fox-Priest is a freelance journalist”. That was a surreal moment as I thought, “wow, someone thinks I’m a writer”. I had to train my brain to accept this new title because I always thought writers were people who wrote books or worked full-time somewhere, not a freelancer.
At the time I felt undeserving of that title, but I now fully embrace it because I’m doing the work. I’m writing and reporting, so that makes me a writer/journalist! What a journey this past year has been. Giving myself a little pat on the back and appreciating the things I did and accomplished.
Who knew you could write about video games for a coffee publication!? I took a chance and found that I really love writing about video games, coffee, and now anime and manga! I live for writing pieces like this and can’t wait to share more and hopefully interview more awesome creators like the feature players in this article.
